Spotlight On Business: The Blue Bungalow

If not for the word Beach to hint at its location, Rockaway Beach Blvd. could easily be mistaken for any urban community within the five boroughs. Driving along the boulevard there is little in the way of amenities to reflect a beach front community. With countless roster of bodegas, nail salons and 99 cent stores, the community has been yearning for stores that accommodate and compliment the needs and desires of those who live in an oceanfront community. Our choices in places to shop have been a lot more shabby than chic, until now!

The Blue Bungalow, located at 113-20 Rockaway Beach Blvd., has been a welcomed success story since it made its debut this past September. The store perfectly articulates the cache of a coastal community. Owners Liz Smith Breslin and Jeanne Jamin, who are more like sisters than business partners, blend their artistic talent and eye for design. Theirs has been a personal collaboration for many years based on love and a passion for the visual arts. Together they bring to the Rockaway Community a store that finally speaks to the pulse of our unique town.

Decorated in pastel shades of ocean blue, the beach theme is everywhere. It is here that you will find that unique gift for that special surfer in your life or just the right piece for your front porch.

Liz Smith Breslin has been decorating and photographing Rockaway and its residents for many years, through her company New York Beach Girl. Her Beach Writings have become iconic.

Jeanne Jamin's talents include Framing, which compliments Liz's photography, Re-upolstory, furniture refinishing and her pastel acrylics are aesthetically stunning.

In addition, The Blue Bungalow also offers one-of-a-kind antiques, home furnishings, flatware, slipcovers, portrait photography, location photography, personalized beach writings, stationary, candles, linens, hand-painted glass, jewelry and pieces that you won't find anywhere else. Shopping at The Blue Bungalow is like going on a treasure hunt. With new pieces arriving each week, you never know what you'll find.

"Our goal is to offer an exciting and charming store that reflects our lives at the beach. We've both been inspired by the quaint, yet "artsy", shops of The Hamptons and the east end, and we've sought to bring that calibre and quality to Rockaway, where we both grew up", states Liz.

The Blue Bungalow name symbolizes our community's identity and a story shared. Come share yours...in the "big blue chair" and get cozy with Liz and Jeanne. They will help you articulate your creative ideas and custom make them into reality.

Holiday store hours are Wednesday through Saturday from 10 am to 6 pm and Sundays from 10 am to 5 pm. Yes, they will be open Christmas Eve. Santa will make his appearance at The Blue Bungalow on Saturday, December 15 from noon 'till 4 pm. Bring the kids for photos with Santa taken by Liz. All major credit cards accepted.
